MASTERCLASS Singer’s Workshop—free of charge!
I’m kicking off the start of my semester with a free masterclass, open to any singer living in or around Shawnee, ages 14 & up (minors must be accompanied by an adult).
Inspired by traditional masterclasses, singers will present a song of their choice, performing in front of me, the other singers presenting, and any audience members. They can accompany themselves on the guitar or piano, use a recorded accompaniment, or sing a cappella. Then, I’ll offer honest, but constructive feedback related to their singing technique and presentation, and I’ll work with them to apply my suggestions during our approximately 10-minute session. Once finished, the next singer will perform, and so forth.
Space is limited to 9 singers! So, sign up fast—it’s first come, first serve.
Audience members are welcome to attend!
The masterclass will take place at Shawnee’s First Christian Church (1625 N Broadway). Use the East/rear entrance. I plan to host this in the choir room, but if we have a lot of folks in attendance, we’ll move to the sanctuary.
TO PERFORM:
Fill out the form below. You will receive an immediate web notification that it’s been sent, and then you’ll be sent an email notification from me with either your time-slot or your order on the waiting list. I won’t prioritize anyone over anyone else—it’s totally first-come, first-serve.
Prepare a song, but try to keep it to under 3 minutes. This is partly because of our time constraint (10-minutes per person), and partly because, as I give my feedback, I’ll ask you to sing bits of the song again, so it’s best to pick something short—even just a 16-bar audition piece is fine.
The song can be any genre—pop, country, bluegrass, gospel, classical, you-name-it. The song needs to be appropriate for all ages since kids may be in attendance. You may accompany yourself (bring your own instrument, or use the piano), bring recorded accompaniment, or sing something a cappella. If you choose to bring a pre-recorded accompaniment, I recommend bringing your own speaker. I will have one, but in case pairing doesn’t work, it’s always a good idea to have a back up.
There is no dress code, but I suggest you wear what you would for an actual performance. It’s always better to be “in character”—plus, we’ll have an audience with the other singers and whoever else decides to attend.
If you bring anything to drink, please make sure it’s in a spill-proof container.
PLEASE!!! Once you sign up, do not “no show”! If something comes up and you know you won’t be able to make it, let me know as soon as possible so that I can give your slot to someone else.
TO ATTEND (as an audience member):
I welcome an audience—all the better for the singers! Attendance is free and you don’t need to sign up, but I have a Facebook event page, so if you plan to attend, it will help me if you click “attend” if you’re on Facebook. If we have a small group, we will be in one location, but if we have a large group, I’ll move it to a larger space within the church.
Kids are welcome, but they must be attended by an adult at all times. It’s important that singers have a distraction-free atmosphere, so if kids are restless, please have a plan to move outside of the performance space.
RULES FOR EVERYONE:
No weapons.
No smoking, vaping, or alcoholic drinks.
Put cell phones on mute. Please, no calls, no texting, and no screens in use during performances. If you need to use your device, please step out of the space we’re using so as not to distract the singers.
No recordings or photos unless you have permission of the singer you are recording. Definitely do not post them online without their expressed permission.
First Christian Church is generously allowing me to use their space, so please make sure you clean up after yourself, if that is applicable (including bathrooms).
Please, no food, and no drinks except those in spill-proof containers.
You are responsible for any lost or stolen items.
Note: the church has an elevator if you need to take it to the second floor. I’ll have clear signage posted.
I am more than happy to discuss singing lessons with you after the masterclass, but there is no obligation whatsoever to study with me. I am more than happy to offer this event free of charge to anyone who thinks they can benefit from it!
